So what is J-Day?

J-Day, or J-dag as the Danes call it, is Denmark’s unofficial holiday. It’s the day Tuborg releases this year’s Julebryg, its Christmas beer, and it always happens on the first Friday of November at exactly 20:59.

The tradition has been going since 1990. The name is short for “Julebryg-dag”, Christmas Brew Day, and for a lot of people it’s the evening Christmas officially begins: Santa hats on, snow in the speakers and a cold one in hand.

Pro tip: Get to the pub before 20:59. It fills up fast.

Always at 20:59. Always on a Friday.

of November. Every single year, whatever the weather.

Not 21:00. That one minute is the whole point.

    Fun things to do

    12 Pubs of Christmas

Twelve bars in one night, and every bar has its own rule. Break it, and the group decides your punishment. Which pub are you at?

    Pub 1 of 12

    Nobody may use first names

    Three Legged Race

Copenhagen’s most legendary pub crawl, born in the old student scene.

    1. Find a partner
    2. Tie your inside legs together
    3. One drink at every bar
    4. The team that reaches the most bars wins

    Pub etiquette

Play away, but remember where you are.

    1. Borrow from the bar. Ask nicely for dice cups or cards. Most traditional Danish pubs have plenty.
    2. Keep the noise down. The regulars at the next table are busy solving the world’s problems.
    3. Mind the beers. The tables are small, so no wild throws with dice or cards.

    Pub drinking games

They take up almost no space and need nothing you can’t borrow at the bar.

    Dice

    Snyd (Liar’s Dice)

A dice cup and 4–5 dice per player

Everyone rolls in secret, then bids on how many dice of a certain value are on the whole table. Bluffing is allowed. Whoever loses the round takes a penalty sip.

    Meyer

One dice cup and 2 dice, passed around

Beat the roll of the player before you, or lie about it. A Meyer (1 and 2) beats everything. Get caught lying or roll too low, and it costs you a sip.

    Cards

    Røvhul (President)

    A standard deck of cards

Be the first to get rid of your cards. The loser becomes the Røvhul (the arsehole) for the next round and has to pour or fetch beer for the President.

    Pyramiden (The Pyramid)

    A standard deck of cards

Lay the cards face down in a pyramid and deal everyone four cards. When a card is turned, hand out sips if you hold a match – or bluff. Get caught bluffing, and you drink double.

    No gear needed

    Fuzzy Duck

    Just your voices

Take turns saying “Fuzzy Duck” clockwise. If someone says “Does he?”, the direction flips and it becomes “Ducky Fuzz”. Fluff the words or miss your turn, and you drink. Gets very hard after a few beers.

    Rommelpot (Sevens)

    Quick mental maths

Count in turns: 1, 2, 3 … If a number is in the 7 times table or contains a 7 (7, 14, 17, 21 …), say “Rommelpot” instead, and the direction flips. Mistakes cost a sip.
